The central space of the six buildings that form the campus of the Northeast Bronx Educational Campus is a raised concrete plaza deck forming the roof of several gymnasiums and dance studios. Despite its central location this space was unused and offered no symbolic center to the campus. The campus is also very heavily used and was short of athletic facilities.

A steel truss roof and covered bleacher seating was designed which would enable the plaza deck to be used for sports and other events. The roofed area allows for three full size basketball courts and can be used for campus wide activities, such as graduation ceremonies.

Steel columns supporting the light weight roof are anchored to existing heavy girders. The roof is translucent and provides a central focus to the campus buildings, creating a sense of community.
