Jill Chaifetz Transfer High School

The Jill Chaifetz Transfer High School is located in an existing building at the Northeast corner of Crotona Park in the Bronx and involved the complete renovation and fit out of three ten thousand square foot floors, as well as extensive roof work for mechanical equipment. The program is for a transfer school, which is a specialized high school for older students seeking to complete their high school diploma.

The project involves spaces particularly suited to the needs of older transfer students, such as a cafeteria that avoids the appearance of a typical high school space, and is more evocative of a neighborhood cafe'. Learning spaces are similarly specialized, and include a multipurpose room, guidance suite, science classroom and library, as well as five classrooms for a total student population of 231. The school is provided with a full commercial kitchen and administration suite.

The architectural intent is to provide an atmosphere of spaciousness and light, making the best use of the existing tall ceilings and park views, but at the same time using very durable materials appropriate for an inner city facility dedicated to older students.

The project will attain a green rating from New York City, which is a rating based on USGBC (United States Green Buildings Council).
