PS 196Q Addition

The addition to PS 196Q in the Forest Hills section of Queens is a new 45,000 SF building that expands a 1952 State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) listed School. The project will attain a green rating from New York City, which is a rating based on USGBC (United States Green Building Council). The addition also received SHPO approval for historical appropriateness.

The project contains facilities for a 1,129 seat K-5 school including new capacity of 644, and includes improvement to the adjacent joint operated park as well as a new kitchen and cafeteria under a play yard plaza deck containing kindergarten play space.

The style of the new wing is based on elements of the existing building, including the language of midcentury modernist industrial design and the cubist masonry massing of the existing gymnasium wing.

The project involves multiple improvements within the existing building, including a new administrative suite and a new elevatored linking structure to a gymnasium and a new library.

Facilities provided by the project include 3 pre-kindergarten classrooms, 4 kindergarten classrooms, 10 classrooms, 2 special educational classrooms, an art classroom, music classrooms, science classroom, library, medical suite, administrative suite, cafeteria and kitchen.
